Some Highlights from YWTF Events - (it's been a busy year)

Europe in Crisis

Event held at Gripple Head Office

Ex MEP Nick Clegg (Centre) with YWTF Board Members Bernd E Klein (L) and Chris Middleton (R)

Nick successfully exposed some of the European Myth in the UK concerning the introduction of new laws. Much legislation is introduced and supported by the British Government or brought in by Whitehall, even though some of the public believe it is imposed from Europe.

Having been working in the European parliament for the past 4 years, Nick is now Sheffield Hallam's MP and part of a European "Think Tank" in Bruxelles.

Nick was able inform the Forum's members about how the European parliament works; comparing it to the UK parliament; how the Bruxelles administration works and how much the UK is involved in it. A lively discussion followed after Nick's introduction.

No wonder, the evening went on for more than one hour longer then originally planned!

06.09.2005    Forum Visits Sheffield's Lord Mayor

YWTF Board Members Bernd E Klein (L) and Kenneth L Torres (R) with The Lord Mayor and John Link of Link Pumps

On 6th September 2005 Lord Mayor Roger Davidson welcomed two of  YWTF's board members Bernd E Klein and Kenneth L Torres together with Mr John Link of Link Pumps, Melbourne, Australia for an informal discussion. The subjects covered included the lack of an attractive website for Sheffield and any form of tourist point.

The Lord Mayor welcomed very much the Yorkshire World Trade Forum activities as he himself has always been interested in exports and international trade. He also offered his parlour as the venue for one of the next YWTF events. This event will feature a guest speaker whose name is being kept secret for the present.

It is good to have Sheffield's number one citizen as a supporter of YWTF.

Sheffield Schools visit Yorkshire World Trade Forum

Head Teachers Ken Dunn and Roger Maleham with YWTF Board Members Prof. Anthony Fretwell-Downing (L) and David Pinder OBE (R)

Head teachers Ken Dunn of City School, Sheffield and Roger Maleham of Fir Vale School, Sheffield - both schools been awarded with the business and enterprise status- where guests at the Forum's last board meeting, which took place on 12.9. at the offices of YFM at the Quadrant, Sheffield. The 3rd school with this status award, Newfield School (Peter Feek) had to cancel the visit on the last minute. The school head teachers presented their school and their ambitions/ future programme and their ideas how the Forum and its members could help to succeed. After discussions it was agreed that student visits should be arranged to member firms, discussions between the students and the company's management to be part of it. It was agreed, that this could help the students to understand better the real world of manufacturing/ business and international trade.

26.10.2005 Member-Networking event at Whirlow Brook Hall, Ecclesall Road South,Sheffield

YWTF GIVE THUMBS UP TO MADE IN SHEFFIELD

Some of the region’s highest profile exporters and importers have added their backing to the "Made in Sheffield" mark, thanks to the Yorkshire World Trade Forum (YWTF). Members of the YWTF showed their support for the "Made in Sheffield" mark, which is intended to promote the city’s high quality production industries.
Guest speaker, Charles Turner, co-chairman of Sheffield Manufacturers Group, the organisation leading the "Made in Sheffield" campaign, was joined by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Roger Davison, who welcomed the YWTF’s activities in promoting world trade and supporting UK manufacturing.
Also in attendance was Peter Matthews, chairman of the Midlands World Trade Forum, who highlighted the rise of his organisation, which now boasts a membership of almost 500 and gave an overview of its influence within the midlands international business community as a model for the YWTF.
Bernd Klein, chairman of the YWTF, said: "Our members agree that the "Made in Sheffield" mark is seen as a sign of quality and would benefit their businesses when trading abroad. I would like to thank all of our guests for attending this meeting, which showed again that the forum is becoming the voice of those actively involved in international business."
